In the annals of medical history, Dr. William DeVries stands as a towering figure. He is the pioneer who performed the first artificial heart transplant, a groundbreaking procedure that has saved countless lives. His story is one of brilliance, determination, and unwavering compassion.
DeVries was born in 1933 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He showed an early interest in medicine, and after graduating from high school, he attended the University of Michigan, where he earned his medical degree. After completing his residency at the University of Minnesota, DeVries joined the faculty of the University of Utah in 1965.
At Utah, DeVries began to develop his ideas for an artificial heart. He believed that such a device could save the lives of patients who were suffering from end-stage heart failure. At the time, the only treatment for these patients was a heart transplant, but this was a very risky procedure with a low success rate.
DeVries's artificial heart was a radical departure from previous designs. It was made of a soft, flexible material that would not damage the patient's body. It was also powered by a small, implantable battery.
In 1982, DeVries performed the first artificial heart transplant on a patient named Barney Clark. Clark was a 61-year-old dentist who was suffering from end-stage heart failure. The transplant was a success, and Clark lived for 112 days with the artificial heart.
Clark's death was a setback for DeVries's research, but it did not deter him. He continued to refine his artificial heart, and in 1985, he performed the first successful permanent artificial heart transplant. The patient, Robert Jarvik, lived for 20 months with the artificial heart.
DeVries's work has paved the way for countless other artificial heart transplants. Today, the artificial heart is a standard treatment for patients who are suffering from end-stage heart failure.
Just One More Thing, Doc is the incredible story of Dr. William DeVries and the first artificial heart transplant. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of medicine, or for anyone who wants to be inspired by a truly remarkable story.
