About the Author
John Kennedy Toole was an American novelist. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1937. Toole attended Tulane University and Columbia University. After graduating from Columbia, he moved to New York City, where he worked as a teacher and a writer. In 1969, Toole completed his first novel, A Confederacy of Dunces. However, the novel was rejected by several publishers, and Toole fell into a depression. In 1980, Toole committed suicide.
After Toole's death, his mother found the manuscript for A Confederacy of Dunces and submitted it to the Louisiana State University Press. The novel was published in 1980 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981.
A Fear of Hat Loss in Las Vegas is Toole's second novel. It was published posthumously in 1981.
